Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes announced himself as he scored his maiden goal for Manchester United from the spot on Sunday as the Red Devils improved their chances for qualifying for next season’s Champions League with a 3-0 win over Watford at the Old Trafford Stadium.
The goal came at the stroke of half-time in the 42nd-minute when he was brought down by Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster – a former United player – as he surged through into the area.
He kept a calm head while taking the penalty as he slotted it at the back of the net.
With that, the Red Devils went into half-time with the lead.
Thirteen minutes into the second half, Anthony Martial came up with a cheeky finish after the ball was initially blocked by the goalkeeper.
Finally, in the last quarter of the match, Mason Greenwood got his name on the scoresheet as he put the final nail in the coffin for Watford.
In the dying minutes of the game, Watford winger Gerard Deulofeu curled a shot onto the crossbar before Greenwood made the points safe, collecting Fernandes’ inside pass and rifling a fierce shot into the roof of the net from just inside the area.
Odion Ighalo, the former Watford striker signed by United from the Chinese Super League on transfer deadline day last month, came off the bench for his home debut and struck the post with a shot in the 84th after rounding Foster.
With the win, United climb to the fifth spot. They have 41 points.
In the meanwhile, Watford stares relegation scare. They are languishing at the nineteenth spot with 24 points.
Liverpool with 76 points from 50 games is the table toppers and they are followed by Manchester City who has 57 points.
