The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank given to Indian women’s T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been withdrawn by the Punjab government after it has been found that her educational qualification testimonials were ‘fake’, according to a report.
Harmanpreet, who is a native of Moga, had joined as a DSP in Punjab Police from March 1. She had submitted a 2011 graduation degree purportedly issued by Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut.
“The state government has written to Harmanpreet that since that since now her qualification can only be treated as Class XII, she can at best be retained by the Punjab police as a constable,” a Times of India report quoted an official in Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s office as saying. As per Punjab Police rules, Harmanpreet’s present education qualification is not commensurate with the rank of the DSP.
The educational qualification testimonials of the 29-year-old Indian cricketer were verified by Punjab Armed Police, Jalandhar where they confirmed that the roll number and enrolment number mentioned in her graduation marksheet do no exist in its record, reported TOI.
Harmanpreet could even lose her Arjuna Award if the Punjab Police decides to lodge an FIR against her for forgery and criminal conspiracy over her fake degree. She was earlier employed with the Indian Railways but was relieved from her duties earlier this year after she put in a request to join Punjab Police.
Harmanpreet was offered the DSP rank in Punjab Police by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh after her stellar performance in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 where India reached the finals. She had played a crucial role in India reaching the finals of the prestigious quadrennial event where they lost to England by nine runs. Her hurricane knock of 171 against Australia in the semifinals was the highlight of her contribution.
