This is the 83rd season of India’s premier domestic cricket tournament. This season Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a couple of changes to the competition. Chattisgarh will be making their debut, and that total of 28 regional teams will be in action. One more interesting change to Ranji Trophy will be that no team will play a match at home. BCCI will be arranging the matches between two participating teams at a neutral venue. This is to cut down the home advantage and promote healthy competition between the teams. However, the format of the tournament remains same. Teams are divided into three groups. Group A and B houses nine teams each while Group C comprises of ten teams. After the preliminary round, top three teams from Group A and B and two teams from Group C will advance to the quarter-final round. After that, winners of quarter-final matches will progress to play semi-finals. The final of Ranji Trophy 2016-17 will take place from January 07, 2017 onwards. The venue for the knockout round, including final, will be announced later. The Ranji Trophy 2016-17 groups are as following:
Group A: Mumbai, Baroda, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Railways, Uttar Pradesh.
Group B: Saurashtra, Odisha, Delhi, Maharashtra, Assam, Vidarbha, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Jharkhand.
Group C: Hyderabad, Haryana, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Services, Goa, J&K, Andhra, Chhattisgarh.

Mumbai comes into the tournament as defending champions. In the final of Ranji Trophy 2015-16, Mumbai led by Aditya Tare defeated Saurashtra by an innings and 21 runs. Shreyas Iyer who scored 117 in a low-scoring match was adjudged as Man of the Match.
