Former India off-spinner and star player from MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Ravichandran Ashwin, called time on his Indian Premier League career on Wednesday (August 27). Ashwin announced his retirement from IPL cricket, less than a year after his international retirement bring down the curtain his 15-year-old career in the T20 league.
Ashwin made the announcement on the occasion of Indian festival Ganesh Chaturthi and shared the news of his IPL retirement with a message on his social media handles. “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me,” Ashwin tweeted.
The IPL 2025 season witnessed a homecoming for Ravichandran Ashwin to Dhoni’s CSK team after 2015 as he was bought by the franchise for Rs 9.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction last year. However, Ashwin had a forgettable season for CSK, claiming only 7 wickets in 9 matches as Dhoni’s team finished in last place on the Points Table.
Overall, Ashwin ended his IPL career as the 5th highest wicket-taker in the history of the league with 187 wickets in 221 matches at an average of 30.22. His finest season was IPL 2011 when he led Dhoni’s CSK to the title with 20 wickets in 16 matches.
Apart from CSK, Ashwin also turned out for Rising Pune Supergiants for one year when CSK were banned due to spot-fixing, played a couple of seasons for Punjab Kings and even led the team, three seasons for Rajasthan Royals and a couple of seasons for Delhi Capitals.
Ashwin also managed to score 833 runs with the bat in 221 games in IPL with one half-century to his name.
After announcing his retirement from IPL following his international retirement last year, Ashwin is now free to play in other T20 leagues around the world like Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik and other former India cricketers. Ashwin retired from Test cricket with 537 wickets – the second highest in Indian cricketer behind only Anil Kumble.
He also claimed 156 wickets in ODIs and 72 scalps in T20I cricket. Overall, he had 317 wickets in 333 matches in T20 cricket in his career.
