New Delhi: Shubman Gill-led India recorded its third-largest innings win against the West Indies, in the first Test at Ahmedabad on Saturday.
India defeated West Indies by an innings and 140 runs on the third day of the opening Test of the two-match series in Ahmedabad on Saturday. After scoring 162 in their first innings, the West Indies were dismissed for 146 in the second innings, while India had declared their first innings at 448 for 5.
Alick Athanaze (38) and Justin Greaves (25) put up a brief fight, but India were in full control as they kept up pressure throughout. Ravindra Jadeja, who had smashed a century in the first innings, impressed again with the ball as he picked 4 wickets conceding 54 runs.
After dismissing the West Indies for 162 in the first innings, India declared at their overnight score, securing a 286-run lead. The West Indies top order failed to deliver again under India’s incisive bowling, supported by alert fielding. At square leg, Nitish Kumar Reddy executed a stunning left dive to catch Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who had attempted a pull off Mohammed Siraj’s delivery.
Jadeja delivered key breakthroughs to rattle the West Indies, partnering with Mohammed Siraj to dismantle their batting order. India secured a commanding victory by an innings and 140-run on the third day, having declared at 448 for 5 and then bowling the visitors out for 146 in 45.1 overs.
Siraj (3/31) and Jadeja (4/54) were India’s key bowlers, with Siraj securing a seven-wicket match haul, continuing his excellent form. While Athanaze and Greaves top-scored for the West Indies, their contributions could not stop the loss.
This was India’s first home Test match in 15 years without Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, all of whom retired last season. Their previous home outing, against New Zealand in October, ended in a 3-0 defeat. The West Indies have not beaten India in 25 Tests, either at home or abroad, since 2002.
The second and final Test of the series is set to be played on October 10 in New Delhi.
