IPL 2019: With 79 days to go for Team India’s World Cup opener, many Indian cricketers will look at the upcoming season of IPL as an opportunity to impress and seal themselves a World Cup spot. It will not be easy to convince the selectors as the two formats are different, but if the performances are exceptionally good, then maybe, just maybe they can get on the UK-bound flight later this year as a part of Team India. Players like Rishabh Pant, Vijay Shankar, Ambati Rayudu, Ishant Sharma will look to cement themselves that spot. Others like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane would also feel they have an outside chance of making it.
In this piece, we will speak of four players who are in touching distance of making the WC squad for Team India.
Vijay Shankar: The tall allrounder is looked at as an ideal replacement for Hardik Pandya. With his promising performances off late, the Tamil Nadu-born cricketer has pushed the envelope and could make it to the team even if Hardik Pandya is there. He can bat well and can also chip in with the ball in pressure situations and that makes him a good package to have.
Ambati Rayudu: The Hyderabad cricketer was considered to be India’s No 4 for the WC, but with his patchy performances recently, he will have to prove his worth all over again to convince the selectors to get him onboard. Inconsistency has been the biggest drawback for the cricketer.
Ishant Sharma: Renowned as India’s best bowler in red-ball cricket, the experienced Ishant Sharma has expressed his views on his selection in the WC squad. Ishant feels if he can bowl well during the IPL, he could get picked for the side. Chances are next to none, yet no one can predict anything. What if someone picks up an injury?
Rishabh Pant: The conundrum over him has been going on for some time now. He is good, but inexperience could lead to his downfall. One feels that he still needs to impress to make it to the Men in Blue for the WC. He has got his chances but has not been able to seal it completely. He will have a competition with Dinesh Karthik for the reserve wicketkeeper for India.
It remains to be seen who gets picked and who misses the UK flight. Only time will give us the answer.
