Rohan Bopanna of India and Florin Mergea of Romania registered a shock win by beating the top pair of Mike and Bob Bryan in the quarterfinal clash of Wimbledon 2015 on Tuesday. The Indo-Romanian pair have now reached their maiden semi-final in a Grand Slam. They beat the Bryan brothers 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) in a thrilling four-setter, coming back to win three straight sets after losing the first one.
Rohan Bopanna is the only Indian apart from Sania Mirza, who is top seeded along with Martina ingis in the women’s doubles, to be still alive with the hope of winning the Wimbledon championship. While neither Bopanna and Mergea have won a grand slam title, they did manage to upset the Bryan brothers who have won a total of 16 Grand Slams together.
Earlier in the competition, ninth seeded Indo-Romanian pair of Bopanna and Florin Mergea faced stiff resistance from Lukasz Kubot from Poland and Max Mirnyi from Belarus before prevailing 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 7-5 (5) 7-6 (8) in a marathon third round, which lasted three hours and 19 minutes.
On the other hand, Continuing their dominating run, top seeds Sania and Swiss legend Martina Hingis downed 16th seeded Spanish team of Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-4 6-3 in just 66 minutes. Sania and Hingis broke their rivals twice in the opening set and three times in the second set. They lost serve once in the opening set and twice in the second. (with inputs from PTI)
