The 37-year-old, who last played in the IPL 2025 season in May, was initially expected to play for India A in the three match 50-over games against Australia A at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium next month. He along with Virat Kohli was expected to play, as part of the buildup to the ODI series in Australia. However, both were left out of the squad.
This development followed weeks of speculation that both senior batters might play their final international series during the Australia tour. Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from T20Is in June last year after India emerged victorious in 2024 T20I World Cup in Barbados.
Later, they also bid farewell to Test cricket in May this year, two weeks before the squad was announced for the England tour. A media report suggested that the duo could bring down the curtain on their international careers in Australia, as selectors were expected to push them towards domestic cricket to remain in contention for ODIs should they aim to continue until the 2027 World Cup.
However, neither has spoken about the ongoing rumours, both Rohit and Kohli completed their mandatory pre-season fitness tests. Rohit underwent his tests at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he also extended his stay to train for the Australia ODI series, while Kohli, took his test in London, where he has been based since the end of the IPL 2025 season.
