Experienced Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are expected to come back to international matches, as the All India Selection Committee is likely to reveal the team for the Australia series on Saturday. Both senior players are expected to be part of the ODI squad, which will be their first game for India since the Champions Trophy.
Earlier, during the IPL, they surprised everyone by announcing their retirement from Test cricket right before the England series, creating a gap in leadership. Fans are eagerly waiting for their return, as their presence will bring strength and experience to India’s 50-over team.
The team is expected to be picked on Saturday, which will be the third day of the current first Test match between India and the West Indies in Ahmedabad.
In the Champions Trophy, Virat Kohli played brilliantly, hitting a century against Pakistan and leading the run charts in the semi-final versus Australia. On the other hand, Rohit bounced back from a rough phase to play a match-winning knock in the final against New Zealand, proving once again that he performs well in crucial games. India lifted the trophy, making it the second ICC title under Rohit’s leadership in less than a year. Still, the BCCI is looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup and is closely reviewing Rohit’s role as captain.
As per a Cricbuzz report, the board will talk about Rohit’s captaincy future during the selection meeting with him in person on Saturday.
Rohit Sharma has successfully cleared his fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He has been training hard to regain full fitness after being away from international matches for seven months. Reports also mention that Kohli took his fitness test in London and passed it without any issues.
One clue that both Kohli and Rohit might be included in the ODI squad is the official promo released by the broadcasters, which features both of these white-ball greats.
At the same time, the selectors have a tough job replacing Hardik Pandya, who is out with a thigh injury, and Rishabh Pant, who is still healing from a broken foot and will miss the upcoming white-ball games. Test skipper Shubman Gill, who recently captained India in the Asia Cup and is about to play two Tests within three days, is dealing with a packed schedule. Due to the physical strain and tight timing, the selectors might decide to give him a break from the ODIs, T20Is, or possibly both formats to keep him healthy and ready for the longer-format matches coming up.
