Dada-God

At Kolkata, Indian cricket icons and former skippers Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly are at a meeting in Kolkata with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials. Over the last few weeks, there have been several rumours doing the rounds about some of the former Indian greats joining the Indian team in some capacity, lending support and direction to the young team who are on the verge of transition, especially in Test cricket.

The current Indian side is not bereft of experience and know-how, as they gear up for a trip to Bangladesh, which starts on June 10th. There are plenty of reasons to smile in the One-Day International (ODI) circuit. With MS Dhoni’s retirement in Test cricket, it is the longer format that needs attention. India exceeded expectations at the World Cup 2015 and have a pool of youngsters, with whom the abridged versions of the game are in safe hands for the foreseeable future. Dhoni’s wretched away record in the longest format of the game has been heavily scrutinised over the years and this is where Ganguly’s inputs will be of paramount importance.

The Prince of Kolkata changed the landscape of how Indian cricket approached abroad tours under his tenure and the team found a new found confidence to eke out draws and if needed, go for the win too, however hostile the conditions were. Despite Sachin Tendulkar’s disappointing two stints as captain, his teammates swear that his inputs were instrumental for many a win over the years.

Ganguly has now moved on to become a popular television commentator and Tendulkar is enjoying his retirement phase and is fresh from mentoring Mumbai Indians to their second Indian Premier League (IPL) triumph. From the initial overtures, it is evident that Ganguly, Tendulkar or VVS Laxman, who is also a part of the meet, are hesitant to take up a coaching role with the team. But public demand or even BCCI’s demand is sky high. They have Indian cricket wrapped around their little finger and they are the superheroes the team needs. As Ravi Shastri showed the way recently, Indian team needs a mentor more than a disciplinarian and this is way a Ganguly or a Laxman’s inputs can lead the for a decade of success.
