Saina Nehwal beat China’s Sun Yu 11-21, 21-14, 21-19 in the final of the Australian Open. This was a big tournament for Saina in the preparation for bigger things ahead in the year. The Olympics of course is Saina’s big aim this year. There is nothing quite like the Olympics and the World Championships in badminton. These two tournaments come with the highest points on the radar. (Also see: Need lot of match practice before Olympics: Fit-again Saina Nehwal) Also Read - Saina Nehwal, Parupalli Kashyap Pull Out of Denmark Open Super 750 Tournament

Saina has never managed a gold in either of these two events and one would like to believe that she would feel that she has reached at a certain level once she achieves that. This is keeping in mind that we are talking about a former world number one, no less. Saina achived a bronze in the last Olympics. She is currently ranked number eight in the world. Talking about the World Championships, she has attained a silver in the prestigious tournament. While she has taken part at the World Championships eight times, the upcoming Olympics will be her third. The Australian Open meanwhile is an important event. This because it is a Super Series tournament. Saina has won this event before in 2014, this was the first time she participated Down Under.

Last year, she was beaten in the quarters. The Australian Open is a relatively new tournament which began in the year 2014 itself. Saina has had several misses in the year 2016 where she has come close to winning multiple tournaments. She would love to avoid that come the big Olympics in Rio.
