Another disappointment came in India’s way as Indian tennis mixed doubles pair of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna failed to make their way to the final of Rio Olympics 2016. The two were up against USA, a pair that comprised of experienced Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram. While the two won the first set, they lost the second and later on the tie-breaker in a close fight and failed to proceed any further. The two will now face Czech Republic’s Lucie Hradecká and Radek Štěpánek for bronze medal on Sunday. Sania and Bopanna started off brilliantly, winning the first set 6-2. But Williams and Ram made a brilliant comeback in the next set, snatching it away from the Indian pair 2-6. Sania and Bopanna lost it in the tie-breakers as the score read 10-3 in favour of the USA pair.

Earlier, Sania-Bopanna had defeated Australia’s Sam Stosur and Jonathan Peers in the first round with ease (7-5, 6-4) to reach the quarter-finals. India were up against the British pair of Andy Murray and Heather Watson in quarter-final and won the match 6-4, 6-4 straight to reach semi-final.

India’s performance in men’s and women’s doubles has been pretty disappointing. Leander Paes- Rohan Bopanna lost their first game in first round of men’s doubles and exited from competition while, it was Sania Mirza with Prarthna Thombare who could not proceed further the first round following their defeat in the very first match.

India have not won a single medal till the end of Day 8 in this edition of Olympics. India’s run in archery, though medal-less, has been praised while shooting had been a disappointment. India’s main hopes lie in boxing and the individual rounds of badminton now as the athletes are still in contention for medals.
