Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has come out in support of veteran cricketer Mithali Raj as he slammed India women T20 cricket team skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for supporting team coach Ramesh Powar. Manjrekar reminded Kaur that Powar was not the coach when India reached the finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup last year. Manjrekar in his latest tweet, “Harmanpreet needs reminding that when Powar was not coach India reached the finals of the WC and almost won it. By suggesting that if Powar is removed we have to start from scratch is an exaggeration of any coach’s role in the team.”

Earlier, Mithali Raj accused the team management, especially coach Powar of bias after she was surprisingly dropped from the team in the semi-finals against England in the Women’s World T20. Mithali was in hot form when she got dropped as she had just bagged consecutive player of the match awards. Once this controversy took centrestage, Mithali found a lot of support.
Overwhelmed by the support, Mithali took to her official Instagram handle to express her gratitude towards the fans for wishing her on her birthday and extending their unflinching support towards her. She wrote, “Spent my birthday doing what I love – on the field, playing a good game of cricket.”
“Thank you, everyone, for all your wonderful wishes! It was emotional, overwhelming, the kind of love I’ve gotten, not just yesterday but over the last few weeks. You unflinching support gives me strength and is the best gift I’ve received.”
Harmanpreet had lauded Powar for changing the face of women’s cricket after Mithali made the accusations.
