September 24, 2007: 11 Years Ago, MS Dhoni & Co Lifted The Inaugural World T20 Trophy Defeating Arch-Rival Pakistan in Pulsating Final
India had gone into the tournament without cricket greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble who all decided to skip the tournament. And the captaincy was given to a young but charismatic MS Dhoni, who later on, went on to become one of India's most successful captains.
On June 25, 1983, the Indian cricket team under the leadership of Kapil Dev scripted history as they won the World Cup for the first time. 24 years later on September 24, Team India once again had the opportunity of being titled as the World Champions after they defeated arch-rival Pakistan in a thrilling, nerve breaking finals of the inaugural edition of the World T20.
India had gone into the tournament without cricket greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble who all decided to skip the tournament. And the captaincy was given to a young but charismatic MS Dhoni, who later on, went on to become one of India’s most successful captains.
Going into the tournament, no one had given the Men in Blue any chance of even making it to the semis, considering their lack of experience in the shortest format of the game. India had played just one T20I match against South Africa a year before.
However, against all odds, Dhoni & Co. went on to defeat the likes of Pakistan, New Zealand, England, South Africa and Australia en route to the finals where they face the Shoaib Malik-led Pakistan for the second time in the tournament.
The summit clash was played in Johannesburg where India posted a competitive total of 157/5 after electing to bat. Gautam Gambhir was the top scorer with 75, while Rohit Sharma’s late cameo took India’s total past 150.

In reply, Pakistan got off to a poor start losing Mohammad Hafeez in the very first over and at one stage, they were reeling at 104/7. However, just when it seemed that India would convincingly win the match as well as the tournament, veteran batsman Misbah-ul-Haq took the responsibility in his own hands and tried to pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Misbah hit the Indian bowlers to all parts of the ground and kept his team in the hunt. In last over, Pakistan needed 13 runs with only one wicket in hand.
Dhoni gave right-arm medium pacer Joginder Singh the responsibility to defend those 13 runs. Misbah hit Joginder for a gigantic six over his head and the nerves started jangling in both the camps.

Only six runs were needed off the last four balls and it seemed like the Men in Green would take the game away. However, on the third ball, Misbah played a shot that he will probably regret for the rest of his life as he tried scoop Joginder over short fine-leg, only to find the grateful hands of S. Sreesanth, who made no mistake and catches the ball to handover India one of its most famous wins in cricketing history.
