Shane Watson has been caught in the red by match officials during his time with the Australian team in the past and yet again, the all-rounder was caught violating the spirit of the game during an Indian Premier League (IPL) game. Watson had apparently used abusive language against the on-field umpires after a decision didn’t go his way. A fine has been slapped against Watson although it is unclear as to how much the 34-year-old has to fork out.
Watson’s side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) was playing against Delhi Daredevils in match that was supposed to decide the fate of the two sides. RCB, who had gone through a lean patch when the tournament started restricted their opponents to 138. In reply, skipper and Orange Cap holder, Virat Kohli turned on the style yet again with an exquisite half-century. Watson had also played a good cameo at the other end as RCB romped home with six wickets to spare.
Watson’s combative demeanour on the field has landed him in trouble in the past too. Playing for Australia, the burly Queenslander had quite a few run-ins, and the list included his current teammate, Chris Gayle. RCB, with their win against Zaheer Khan’s Delhi Daredevils have completed a remarkable turnaround of fortunes to progress to the Playoffs of the IPL. Before joining the Bangalore-based franchise, Watson had played for the now suspended Rajasthan Royals, with whom he won the inaugural edition of the IPL. The details of Watson’s deducted match fee will be announced shortly.
