New Delhi: Team India's captain Shubman Gill found great form soon after taking charge of the Test team. He had an impressive England tour, as he scored 754 runs across five Tests, and carried his fine form in the first Test against the West Indies with a brilliant fifty.
Gill coming in to bat at number 4 has strengthened India's middle order. Gill will aim to extend his remarkable run in the second Test at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, which is scheduled to be played from October 10.
Gill 196 runs away to achieve This milestone
Gill has amassed 804 runs in six Test matches this year and if he manages to score 196 runs in the upcoming 2nd Test against West Indies, he will become the first player to score 1000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-2027.
After Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gill will be the fourth Indian batter to reach 1000 runs or more in a single WTC tournament. In the WTC's first edition, Rahane and Rohit scored 1159 and 1094 runs, respectively, while Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 1798 runs in the 2023 2025 WTC cycle.
Joe root holds the record of most runs in a single WTC edition
Shubman Gill is well on his track to chase a major WTC milestone. His brilliant start gives him a strong chance of becoming the first player in the world to score 2,000 runs in a single WTC cycle. Currently, the record for the most runs in a single edition is held by Joe Root, who amassed 1,968 runs in 22 matches during the 2023 2025 WTC season.
India is scheduled to play one Test against the West Indies, two against South Africa, two each against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, and five against Australia, Gill might surpass the 2,000-run mark in the ongoing WTC cycle, if he carries his fine form.
