New Delhi: Goa and Arunachal Pradesh squared off starting November 13 at the Goa Cricket Association Academy in Porvorim in the 2024 Ranji Trophy.
The visiting team won the toss and opted to bat first but were restricted to just 84 runs on the opening day. Arjun Tendulkar's exceptional bowling performance, where he took 5 wickets for 25 runs, played a crucial role in dismantling their batting line-up. With this effort, he joined the rare list of players who have both scored a century and taken a five-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy. In response, Goa faced an early setback, losing Ishaan Gadekar for just 3 runs.
Despite the early loss, Goa had managed to reach 121 runs when Suyash Prabhudessai was dismissed for a well-played 73 off 64 balls. Following his departure, Snehal Kauthankar partnered with Kashyap Bakle, and together they formed a historic partnership that propelled Goa's total further.
Kauthankar delivered a stunning triple century, marking the third-fastest in first-class cricket history and the second-fastest against Arunachal Pradesh. Not to be outdone, Bakle also scored a triple century, reaching the landmark in 269 balls, making it the 9th fastest in first-class cricket history.
Bakle and Kauthankar formed an astonishing 606-run partnership for the third wicket, falling just 19 runs short of the world record for the highest partnership in first-class cricket history. The current record of 624 runs is held by the legendary Sri Lankan duo of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, set against South Africa in 2006.
Goa captain Darshan Misal made a swift decision to declare immediately after Bakle reached his triple hundred, effectively preventing the duo from breaking the massive world record.
Bakle and Kauthankar achieved a rare feat by becoming the second pair of batters in first-class cricket history to both score triple centuries in a single innings. The first pair to achieve this were WV Raman (313) and Arjan Kripal Singh (302*) of Tamil Nadu during the 1988-89 Ranji Trophy season.
