After edging out Sri Lanka in closely contested ODI series by 3-2, South Africa are all set to host neighbours Zimbabwe for three-match ODI and T20I series. The Proteas will be looking to continue with their ‘positive’ brand of cricket in the first of three One-Day Internationals (ODI) against Zimbabwe at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Sunday.
The men from the Rainbow nation unleashed this explosive approach in the 3-2 series win against Sri Lanka last month, and look set to continue fine-tuning their methods against their neighbours. Stand-in captain, JP Duminy, who was one of the standout performers under the new mindset in Sri Lanka, says the series will give the players more opportunities to find consistency and balance in their game plans.
For the Proteas, there are a few changes in the squad such as the inclusion of Dale Steyn which will bolster the pace bowling attack which is already lethal with Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada. Regular skipper Faf du Plessis had been rested.
The Proteas are the overwhelming favourites to win the series – they have won 35 of the 38 ODI matches (2 losses and 1 no result) played – but remain wary of the visitors who are bolstered by experienced campaigners and match-winners in their squad. The Proteas are also going through an experimental phase with a number of new faces in the squad and will be giving every player in the squad a run throughout the series.
For Zimbabwe, the boost is the return of batting trio, Craig Ervine, Brendan Taylor and Sean Williams. The trio were selected again in the side after the pay dispute with the board. In the bowling department, Elton Chigumbura will be teaming go men as he is the leading ODI wicket-taker for his country in the current squad.
