Rio Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu is the only Indian to feature in the list of top 10 highest paid female athletes of the world. As per the list published by Forbes on Tuesday, Sindhu, who has a total of $8.5 million in earnings, is at the seventh spot. The list is topped by American tennis star Serena Williams.
“The Indian badminton player burst on the scene with a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She was the first Indian female athlete to win a silver. The 23-year-old has a robust sponsor roster with Bridgestone, Gatorade, Nokia, Panasonic, Reckitt Benckiser and a half-dozen other brands,” wrote Forbes.
Apart from Sindhu, the only other non-tennis player on the list is Danica Patrick, who is considered to be the most successful female race car driver ever at the ninth spot in the list.
Serena has total earnings of $18.1 million, almost all of which come via endorsements. She is followed by Caroline Wozniacki ($13 million), Sloane Stephens ($11.2 million), Garbine Muguruza ($11 million), Maria Sharapova ($10.5 million), Venus Williams ($10.2 million), PV Sindhu ($8.5 million), Simona Halep ($7.7 million), Danica Patrick ($7.5 million) and Angelique Kerber ($7 million).
The 10 highest-paid female athletes banked $105 million from prize money, appearances, royalties and endorsements in the 12 months ending June 1, 2018. The tally is down 4 per cent from last year and 28 per cent from five years ago.
