In an unfortunate incident, Vaibhavi Patekar, a state-level powerlifter from Mumbai, was found dead in the Goregaon area on Wednesday. The 18-year-old powerlifter allegedly committed suicide due to the poor financial condition of the family, according to the sources.
Hailing from a family of powerlifters, Vaibhavi’s biggest achievement came in a district-level competition where she bagged the top honours with a gold medal effort.
Vaibhavi was missing from her home since Monday night and her body was found in the wee hours on Wednesday.
Her mother Jyotika Patekar (48), who returned to powerlifting after a 26-year-old hiatus last year is a renowned powerlifter in the state. Jyotika, who used to sells sandwiches on the roadside to earn a living won a silver medal at the national competition of Indian Powerlifting Federation held at Coimbatore.
She lifted a total of 217.5 kg in the squat (82.5 kg), bench press (35 kg) and deadlift (100 kg) categories. While, her daughter Vaibhavi cleared her 12th standard from Goregaon junior college this year.
