India squandered a solid start and went down 1-3 in their third league game against Australia in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia.
The first quarter was goalless but it was India who dominated the action with Akashdeep Singh almost close to finding the net. But India suffered a big blow when star goalie PR Sreejesh limped off after a collision.
In the second quarter too India kept the pressure on the Aussies with SV Sunil and Mandeep Singh close to scoring, especially the latter’s shot bouncing off the post. However, it was Harmanpreet Singh (26′) who put India in the lead with four minutes left in the first half, with a brilliant field goal.
The Australians immediately equalised with Eddie Ockenden (31′) netting one and then took the lead through Tom Craig’ (34′) reverse hit.
In the second half, Australia sealed the game when Tom Wickham (51′) scored with Akash Chikte at the post, replacement for Sreejesh having no chance to save the goal.
India started the tournament with a 2-2 draw against England, then defeated New Zealand 3-0 in their second round-robin match. Next, they take on Japan on Wednesday.
