Indian captain Sunil Chhetri’s tweet post-India’s victory over Kenya 2-0 in the Intercontinental Cup 2018 is winning the internet. It was Sunil Chhetri’s brace in the 8th and 28th minute that ensured the Blue Tigers had no problems in going the distance to clinch the Intercontinental Cup 2018.
Right at the outset, India walked into the match as outright favourites after they beat Kenya in a group stage match 3-0. The game went on the same lines, the only difference being the scoreline. In this match, Kenya posed threat in the second half and the last 25 minutes was not quite easy for India, but Gurinder at goal was flawless, he made a couple of handy saves to keep a clean sheet. Gurinder was also the only goalkeeper in the tournament who has a clean sheet.
Sunil Chhetri ended the tournament with 8 goals from 4 matches. He is now equal with Lionel Messi in terms of highest international goals by an active player. Both players have 64 goals, but Chhetri has a better strike rate. Cristiano Ronaldo is at the top of this list.
Here is the heartfelt tweet Chhetri posted after the match. His post read, “What a feeling! Thank you, India! This win is for the fans who filled the stands, cheered from home and backed and believed in us. The boys and staff pulled together and now it’s time to enjoy. We regroup soon because the road is long – very long.”
He also hashtagged it as champions and rightly so.
India was the better team and the deserving winners.
