Central Districts vs Otago Super Smash T20 2016-17 at New Plymouth was nothing short of a cliffhanger. It was a record-breaking 497-run T20 match, in which Otago emerged victorious by just one run. Chasing 250 from 20 overs, Central Districts lost four wickets but fell short of the daunting target. Mahela Jayawardene scored a century for Central Districts, but that was not enough for his side.
Otago opted to bat first and driven by Hamish Rutherford’s 106 posted 249 on board. Rutherford shared a 130-run stand for the opening wicket Anaru Kitchen, and that laid the solid foundation for Otago.
Central Districts too were off to a good start with an opening pair of George Worker and Jayawardena putting up 72 runs. Jayawardene kept Central Districts in the hunt with a brilliant century.

Jayawardene was dismissed in 19th over, leaving his side to get 21 off 11 balls. Central Districts needed just to win from last over, but Trent Bolt delivered a tight over. With two needed off last ball, wicket-keeper batsman Dane Cleaver was run-out and thus Otago sneaked home by just one run. The aggregate runs scored this match is now the highest in aT20 match. The previous highest was 489 by India and the West Indies at Lauderhill in August this year.
