Surrey vs Kent: Joe Denly Creates T20 World Record, Becomes First Cricketer to Score a Hundred And Then Take a Hat-Trick

There were three previous instances of 50 and a hattrick in T20, and seven in List A, but no century and hat-trick. A laudable feat for sure!

It was an evening that saw records tumble. The 32-year-old all-rounder became the first cricketer to score a century and picked up a hat-trick as well. Kent eventually won the match by 6 runs. Denly scored 102 off 63 balls to set it up for Kent. Kent, batting first, managed to put on a score of 173.

Surrey started their chase well, and was well on course, thanks to and was Foakes (75) unbeaten. But it was not good enough for Surrey to get over the line.

“The Oval is always a decent place to bat, but the outfield was slower than normal and Surrey made scoring boundaries tough by mixing up their pace a bit,” he said after the game.

“I thought at halfway we were 10-15 runs short and that it might take a special bowling performance to win it – although I didn’t expect it would be me!

“I may have taken a hat-trick in the garden before but not out in the middle and if I’m honest it was a naughty hat-trick ball, caught down the leg side, but I’ll take it because it got us back in the game.”

Meanwhile, Denly became the first player in List A 50-over or T20 cricket to score a hundred and take a hattrick in the same match.

There were three previous instances of 50 and a hattrick in T20, and seven in List A. This surely is a laudable feat for a 32-year-old.
