New Delhi: Afghanistan Taliban leader Anas Haqqani has recently expressed his opinion on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma‘s sudden retirement announcement from Test cricket. He said that Rohit’s retirement can be justified, but Kohli’s announcement surprises him.
Haqqani also said that Kohli’s retirement has come too early, and he believes that Kohli should maintain fitness and keep playing till the age of 50.
Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket on 12 May 2025, after scoring 9,230 runs in his Test career, missing the 10,000 Test run mark by just 770 runs. Rohit Sharma also retired from Tests at almost the same time, on 7 May 2025.
After retirement, the captaincy of the team was handed over to Shubman Gill, who led the team to a 2‑2 draw in the series against England. Kohli and Rohit are currently active only in the ODI format and are expected to return for the Australia tour in October. India are currently in the Asia Cup 2025, where they beat UAE by a huge margin in their opening match.
