New Delhi: India A captain Jitesh Sharma clarified why Vaibhav Suryavanshi wasn’t sent out for the Super Over in the Asia Cup Rising Stars 2025 semifinal against Bangladesh A on Friday. Jitesh walked out with Ramandeep Singh, but was dismissed first ball, while Ashutosh Sharma followed and also lasted just one delivery, leaving India without a single run in the Super Over. Bangladesh, despite losing a single wicket in their chase, managed to get the required runs and sealed their place in the final. After the defeat, India A was heavily criticised for leaving out Suryavanshi in the super over, especially given the 14-year-old’s exceptional form throughout the tournament.

Jitesh explained that Vaibhav, who had smashed 38 off 15 balls, is most effective in powerplay situations, so he opted to rely on Ashutosh and Ramandeep instead, believing their skills were better suited for the death overs.

“In the team, Vaibhav and Priyansh are masters of the powerplay, while in the death overs, Ashu and Raman can hit at will. So the Super Over lineup was a team decision, and I made the final call,” Jitesh said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Talking about the match, India A’s disappointing performance with both bat and ball proved costly, as they went down to Bangladesh A in the Super Over of the Rising Stars Asia Cup semifinal.

India A bowlers failed with the ball as Bangladesh posted a total of 194 for six in 20 overs, and the Jitesh Sharma-led side too ended up at the same score, pushing the match into Super Over.

Yet in a confusing move, India chose Jitesh, Ashutosh Sharma, and Ramandeep Singh for the Super Over, even though Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Priyansh Arya were available.

The decision proved disastrous, with pacer Ripon Mondol removing both Jitesh and Ashutosh for ducks in the Super Over.

Bangladesh, despite losing Yasir Ali on the first ball, managed to get the solitary run they needed courtesy of a wide from leg-spinner Suyash Sharma, sealing their place in the final.
