Sir Alex had signed Ronaldo from Sporting CP as an 18-year-old and nurtured him into a quality world threat in football, hence the respect and admiration between the two are mutual and Ronaldo never lets go of an opportunity to meet his former manager whenever he gets a chance. Ronaldo won three Premier League titles, a Champions League and a FIFA World Cup title at United under Sir Alex before joining Real Madrid.

Ronaldo did not make a big contribution in the match, but his assist to Paulo Dybala helped Juventus score the only goal of the match in the 17th-minute to help Juventus beat Manchester United in their own backyard.
