Former world number one Novak Djokovic tops Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets to win his third US Open title in New York, his 14th overall Grand Slam on Sunday. The magnificent victory comes exactly after a year when Djokovic sat out the tournament at Flushing Meadows because of an injured right elbow that eventually required surgery.
Playing his eighth final at the iconic Arthur Ashe stadium, the 31-year old Serb beats his close friend Del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Djokovic also won the US Open in 2011 and 2015 and his victory in 2018 moves him to joint-third alongside Pete Sampras on the all-time list of Grand Slams with 14.
Novak Djokovic Defeats Juan Martin Del Potro to Win Third US Open Title
After winning the Wimbledon earlier in July, Djokovic showed that he is unarguably back at very best and is playing some of the best tennis of his life. His returns and defence-to-offence skills as impeccable as ever, Djokovic collected his 14th Grand Slam title and second in a row by getting through every crucial moment for a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over 2009 champion del Potro at Flushing Meadows.
In total, Djokovic has earned at six Australian Opens, one French Open and four Wimbledons, and three US Open titles. The Serb is now trailing only Roger Federer’s 20 and Rafael Nadal’s 17.
