New Delhi: India captain Virat Kohli on Saturday (November 04) surpassed Tillakaratne Dilshan (1889) to become the second highest run-scorer in T20I cricket. Kohli reached the milestone during the second India vs. New Zealand T20I in Rajkot.
Kohli at the start of the second T20I needed 12 runs to go past Dilshan. The Indian skipper scored 65 and now sits second on the list with 1943 runs. Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum holds the record for most runs in T20Is. McCullum, who retired from cricket last year in February, scored 2140 runs from 71 matches. The Indian captain is likely to better his record in near future.
Meanwhile, it was Kohli’s 18th fifty in T20Is, the most in game’s shortest format by any batsmen. The right-hander looked in marvellous touch against New Zealand but failed to take his side home.
Chasing 197, India managed only 156/7 in 20 overs. India’s response got off to a poor start as Trent Boult removed both Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma in the second over.
Kohli then kept India in the hunt with a 54-run stand for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer. However, India lost wickets of Iyer and Hardik Pandya in quick succession and with that the required run-rate creeped up.
Kohli tried hard to take India close to New Zealand’s total but was left with too much to do. He eventually was dismissed by Mitchell Santner.
New Zealand’s victory in the second T20I means teams will now fight for the series in the third and final T20I on November 07.
