Out of favour India batsman Virender Sehwag plundered 147 runs for Delhi against Haryana on the opening Day of the Ranji Trophy 2014-15 tie at Rohtak in Haryana on Monday. His second consecutive century helped the visitors reach 278 for seven at stumps on Day One. Sehwag smashed 17 boundaries and a six in his 178-ball unbeaten knock.
The innings comes at the back of 105 against Gujarat in Delhi’s previous Ranji Trophy encounter. He continued to dominate the Haryana bowling attack through the day even as the other batsmen in the side failed to play a long innings. Sehwag, who hasn’t been picked in the 30-man preliminary squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been out of the Indian side for almost two year. He played his last Test match against Australia in March 2013. A string of poor scores in domestic cricket didn’t help his cause much either. He was even dropped from the Indian cricket board’s central contract list.
However, much like how Yuvraj Singh’s string of three consecutive centuries in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season has brought back hopes of the southpaw having an outside chance to make it to the World Cup squad, fans of Sehwag too would be optimistic. It is unlikely that he will get selected in the side, but the Nawab of Najafgarh will still keep hope ahead of the D-Day.
Even as the knock has come a little late with the Indian selectors set to pick the squad on Tuesday, Sehwag has entertained and shown glimpses of his vintage form. He will resume his innings on Day Two with just three tail-enders to give him company. However, he will look to pile on a big total and remind the Indian selectors of his worth.
