Mohali: After a starry opening night in Chennai, the action shifts to the northern part of the country on the first double-header Saturday of IPL 2024. Punjab Kings take on Delhi Capitals in the North Indian derby. During the match, spotlight would surely be on Capitals captain Rishabh Pant. The swashbuckling wicketkeeper is making a comeback to competitive cricket after over an year.
Pant was out of action after his near-fatal accident. It would be interesting to see how his fitness is because there is a T20 World Cup coming up next. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer used a clip from the popular Hindi film, ‘Nayak’, to sum up the mood in the country now. In the scene from the film, Anil Kapoor wakes up to all the media glare inside his room.
“Jittery, nervous, excited- all of it, but at the same time, just happy, being able to come back to professional cricket. I’m just looking forward to playing my first game tomorrow,” Pant expressed at the pre-match press conference on Friday.

However, while Pant have worked a lot on his batting, it is unlikely he will keep wickets against Punjab Kings. Avishek Porel, who donned the big gloves last season, is expected to do the tough job again. “Every time I take the field, it’s a different feeling altogether. I just wanted to bat as much as I could and get better every day. I don’t think much ahead, I take one day at a time, and give my 100%,” he added.
For the unknown, Delhi Capitals will be playing two of their home games in Visakhapatnam, the first of which is happening on Saturday. Speaking about the approach this season, Pant said “Most of the conversations are pretty simple, we just want to go out there, have fun, not complicate things and give our 100% in all the games.”
