New Delhi: In the Ranji Trophy match between Maharashtra and Chandigarh, Prithvi Shaw unleashed a batting storm that left cricket fans stunned. Shaw scored a double century in just 141 balls, making it the second-fastest double century in Ranji Trophy history. But the interesting twist was that the Player of the Match award went to Ruturaj Gaikwad and what he did next won the internet over.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, playing for Maharashtra, had played a brilliant innings of 116 runs in the first innings, which helped his team gain a lead over Chandigarh. This performance earned him the Player of the Match award. But the true display of sportsmanship came when he decided to share his award with Prithvi Shaw.
In the second innings, Prithvi Shaw rewrote the record books. He played a blistering innings of 222 runs off just 156 balls. The power and timing of his shots were so exceptional that the spectators were constantly on their feet applauding.
On the morning of the third day, Shaw completed his century in just 72 balls, including 13 fours. This was the sixth-fastest century in Ranji Trophy history. He then went on to complete his double century in just 69 more balls, etching his name in history.
Shaw’s double century was the second-fastest in Ranji Trophy history. The only faster double century was scored by Ravi Shastri in the 1984-85 season in 123 balls. Meanwhile, the record for the fastest double century in Indian first-class cricket belongs to Tanmay Agarwal, who achieved the feat in just 119 balls in 2024.

Prithvi Shaw made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in 2017, but due to a lack of consistency and being dropped from the team in recent years, he moved to Maharashtra ahead of the 2025 season. This decision is proving to be a career revival for him.
In his very first season for Maharashtra, Shaw has shown that he is still a big-match player. After starting with a century in the Buchi Babu tournament, he silenced all his critics with a spectacular performance in the Ranji Trophy.
