New Delhi: Before the opening match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 between India and Sri Lanka, Shreya Ghoshal, dressed in a traditional Indian sari, sang the national anthem, bringing the entire stadium to applause. Her melodious voice and the essence of Indian culture touched the hearts of the spectators.
The match, being played at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, began with Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu winning the toss and electing to bowl. India made a steady start in the powerplay, but a sudden downpour after 10 overs halted play. Covers were rolled and the players left the field.
India suffered an early blow when Udeshika Prabodhani took the crucial wicket of their star opener, Smriti Mandhana. Mandhana attempted a big shot on the off side, but the ball rose in the air, and Vishmi Gunaratne took the catch, giving Sri Lanka the lead.
India is considered one of the favorites for the title in this tournament and is dreaming of winning the World Cup for the first time. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has returned to this major tournament after eight years. Interestingly, when India hosted the World Cup in 2013, Sri Lanka stunned India by defeating them.
