New Delhi: An emotional moment took place during the Super Four match between India and Sri Lanka in the 2025 Asia Cup, as Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav met and comforted young Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage.
22-year-old Dunith Wellalage recently lost his father, Suranga Wellalage. Sri Lankan coach Sanath Jayasuriya informed him of the tragic news after the group match against Afghanistan. He returned to Colombo after his father’s death, but soon returned to Dubai for the Super Four stage.
Suryakumar Yadav approached Wellalage directly at the Dubai International Stadium, placed a hand on his chest, and comforted him. They spoke for about two minutes, with Suryakumar offering continuous support while Wellalage listened and nodded. Sony Sports Network shared this touching moment on social media with the caption, “This moment.”

Wellalage failed to take a wicket in the match against Bangladesh and was subsequently dropped from the squads for the matches against Pakistan and India. However, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha, coach Mike Hesson, and manager Naveed Akram met with him and expressed their support.
Batting first, India posted a score of 202/5. Abhishek Sharma scored 61, while Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma also made significant contributions. In reply, Pathum Nissanka’s century kept Sri Lanka in the match, but after being dismissed in the final over, the match went into a Super Over.
Arshdeep Singh performed brilliantly in the Super Over, conceding just two runs and dismissing Kusal Perera. Suryakumar Yadav then took a run off the very first ball of Wanindu Hasaranga to give India a thrilling victory. With this win, India secured a place in the final of the Asia Cup 2025, where they will face Pakistan.
