Young Indian batter Tilak Varma notched up his maiden T20I hundred off just 51 balls to set up Team India’s 11-run win over South Africa in the 3rd match of the four-game series at the Supersport Park in Centurion on Wednesday. Tilak smashed an unbeaten 107 off 56 balls as Suryakumar Yadav’s side posted 219 for 6 after batting first.

India now lead the four-match series 2-1 with one T20I remaining on Friday. In the process, the Mumbai Indians batter became the youngest batter in the world to score a T20I century against South Africa.

Tilak at 22 years and 4 days broke the record of former India and Chennai Super Kings batter Suresh Raina, who was 23 years and 156 days when he scored a century against the Proteas in the 2010 T20 World Cup match in Gros Islet.

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill is the third youngest centurion vs SA at 26 years and 84 days while former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was 26 years and 181 days when he scored a century against the Proteas at this very ground in Centurion back in 2021.

Tilak’s century coupled with a second T20I fifty by Abhishek Sharma ensured the Indians posted a massive total after being sent into bat. Arshdeep Singh claimed three wickets for 37 and defended 25 runs in the final over of the game to ensure India cannot lose this T20I series.

“I am okay. I cannot put it in words. It was my dream to play for the country and the hundred came at the right time when the team needed it. All credit to Suryakumar Yadav, our captain. He gave me the opportunity to bat at 3 and told me to express myself. Thanks to him again,” Tilak Varma said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“I just backed my basics. Pitch was two paced to start with and it wasn’t easy for the new batters coming in when Abhishek got out. I was ready to bat long and was waiting for one partnership,” he added.
