Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was on Friday arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. According to reports, England’s all-time record scorer and current Everton striker was stopped by police near his home in Cheshire on Thursday night.
Rooney, 31, announced his international retirement last week, after 53 goals for his country in 119 appearances.
A DailyMail source said, “His speech was slurred, his lips were red with wine and his eyes were red. At midnight he was asked if he would come and say hello to guests at a private wedding party.”
He re-joined his boyhood club Everton in the summer and scored in each of his opening two Premier League games.
He also announced his retirement from international football a week after joining Everton.
In a statement, Rooney was quoted saying to BBC: “It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that. However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football.”
Rooney’s last game for England was the win over Scotland in November, with his final goal coming against Iceland last summer.
