West Indies Women stunned Australia Women in the finals of ICC Women’s World T20 2016 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. West Indies chased down the target of 149 in 19.3 overs with eight wickets in hand to clinch their maiden World T20 title.

Captain Stafanie Taylor (59 off 57 balls) and Hayley Matthews (66 off 45 balls) were star performers with the bat for West Indies Women.

Interestingly, West Indies Women had never defeated Australia Women in a T20I match. This was the ninth T20I meeting between the two sides, and all the preceding eight matches went in Australia’s kitty.

Coming back to the match, openers Taylor and Matthews provided West Indies a solid platform and stitched 120 runs for the opening wicket. The duo looked in control of the things right from ball one and never allowed Australian bowlers to settle down. Both reached their respective half-centuries during this stand.

However, with just 29 needed off 27 balls, West Indies lost the first wicket as Matthews (66) was caught at mid-wicket. Right-handed Deandra Dottin then joined the skipper in the middle and the two took West Indies close to the target. In penultimate over, Taylor was dismissed, leaving West Indies to get four off seven deliveries. Dottin (18) and Britney Cooper (3) then finished things for West Indies.

Earlier, after winning the toss, Australia Women posted a challenging 148 on board. Elyse Villani and captain Meg Lanning struck half-centuries each and shared a valuable 77-run stand for the second wicket.

For West Indies, Dottin scalped two wickets while Anisa Mohammed and Stafanie Taylor picked a wicket each.

Brief Scores: West Indies Women 149/2 (H. Mathews 66, K Beams, 1/27) beat Australia Women 148/5 (E Villani 52, D Dottin 2/33) by eight wickets.
