West Indies won the World Cup for the second time in their history and the Twitter world was abuzz by what they had witnessed. The final had crossed all expectations of the fans, who had seen something never seen before. Ben Stokes and Carlos Brathwaite ended up being the talking points of the game after a dramatic last over. It was something that people had seldom seen and the Windies had completed a historic treble — The U-19 World Cup, the Women’s T20 and the men’s World Cup — to place expectations among World cricket that fallen greats have picked themselves up and are ready to stand up and be noticed on the big stage. Also Catch: West Indies vs England – As it happened

Brathwaite might grab the headlines but it has to be noted that Marlon Samuels played a key hand in his side’s win. Watching his top order batsmen throw their wickets away, Samuels steadied the innings with Dwayne Bravo and scored a bulk of the runs too. The contribution from the other batsmen who came after Bravo was almost negligible but Samuels saw it all the way through before Brathwaite etched his name in bold letters under the archlights. England played very well too and were unfortunate to go out this way. Joe Root was exceptional throughout the tournament, showing his class across all three formats. There were other handy contributions too and the loudest cheer came when Virat Kohli’s name was announced, after he received the man of the tournament award.
