India opener Rohit Sharma echoed his feeling after Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman returned to India after spending two days in Pakistan custody as a prisoner of war. Rohit took to Twitter and spoke about the bravery of the soldier. He felt Abhinandan is another name for bravery. The IAF pilot returned to a hero’s welcome on Friday evening after Pakistan PM Imran Khan released him as a gesture of peace. “Welcome to our motherland Another name for bravery.”
Earlier, cricketers like Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and others also welcomed Abhinandan.
Abhinandan, who had shot down a Pakistani fighter jet before his plane went down over the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday during the first aerial encounter between the countries in nearly half a century. He was captured by Pakistan army before Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced his release as a “peace gesture”, signalling the easing of tension between the two countries.
Yesterday, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad had completed the travel documentation of IAF pilot. Reportedly, Pakistani authorities will bring him from Rawalpindi to Lahore and hand him over to the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) under rules of the Geneva Convention.
India and Pakistan were involved in an air battle two days ago in the wake of the Pulwama attack. During that very attack, Abhinandan had heroically shot down Pakistan’s F-16 with his MiG-21 Bison but unfortunately fell in Pakistan after his plane malfunctioned. He was then spotted by Pakistani locals and they handed him over to the army.
