Beijing has won the tender to host the Winter Olympics 2022 beating Almaty, Kazakhsthan and Oslo, Norway as Xi Jinping announced a ‘fantastic, extraordinary and excellent’ event. The secret ballot by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was drawn at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Xi Junping had also uploaded a minute-long video backing China’s bid to and assuring the ‘strongest support’ for the Beijing Games that he presented to the IOC. Xi Junping also said that if Beijing was given the chance to host the Winter Olympics in 2022 then it would ‘boost exchanges and mutual understanding between the Chinese and other civilisations of the world’. The winter games will be held in three places – Beijing, Zhangjiakou in Hebei province which is about 195 kilometers northwest from Beijing and in Yanqing which is about 87 kilometres north west from Beijing and boasts of amazing mountain ranges for some events.
Beijing has a big problem in the form of air pollution but it was tackled with stringent steps taken by the government for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. The IOC was assured that extremely effective steps were taken before and following the 2008 Olympics to curb the pollution problem so that Beijing can become a city known clean energy.
