The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Monday recommended the names of prominent stars Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat for the highest sporting award in the country following their commendable performance in recent years.

In November last year, Punia scripted history by becoming World No. 1. The 25-year-old also bagged gold in Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Most recently, he won the Asian Wrestling Championships in Xi’an, China. The wrestler will be India’s bid for gold in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In the women’s category, it was Vinesh Phogat who dominated headlines. She won the bronze medal in the Asian Wrestling Championships and also registered history to become India’s first woman wrestler to bag gold at the Asian Games in Jakarta last year.

Apart from these two standout performers, the WFI also recommended the names of Rahul Aware, Harpreet Singh, Divya Kakran and Pooja Dhanda for Arjuna award and the names of Virender Kumar, Sujeet Maan, Narendra Kumar & Vikram Kumar for Dronacharya award. While Bheem Singh and Jai Prakash have been recommended for Dhyanchand award.
