They said that no one can fill the void that MS Dhoni created when he took retirement from Test Cricket. They might be or might not be right but Wriddhiman Saha is leaving no stone unturned to fill the place of Mahendra Singh Dhoni who announced retirement from the longer format of the game to focus more on ODIs and T20Is.
To be honest, Wriddhiman Saha has done justice to the role that has been given to him in Indian Cricket team. Bengal wicket-keeper has been able to address the situation with his stable and responsible batting performances, though when you talk about taking place of Dhoni then you can’t just ignore the wonders that he performs behind the stumps. Apart from Helicopter shot, Dhoni is also known for his street smart glovework, quick reflexes and presence of mind and Wriddhiman Saha is also showing glimpses of MS Dhoni behind the stumps as he performed a clever yet cheeky run out on Friday during the second Test between India and England at Visakhapatnam.
In Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling, which was the 21st over of the innings, Joe Root hit the ball to mid-wicket region. Hameed responded to Joe Root’s call for single and was very keen for the second. Debutant Jayant Yadav threw the ball to the keeper in a flash. Root alerted his partner soon, but Hameed was short of the crease when Saha pulled out a blinder. The Indian wicket keeper came in front of the stumps to collect the throw but seemed aware about the position of the stumps as he collected the Yadav throw and did a back-flick onto the stumps to dethrone the bails from the stumps. The awareness and effort was identical to Dhoni’s run out which he performed recently against New Zealand. Even third Umpire was not needed to confirm the run out by Saha as Leg Umpire had a clear view and he raised his finger to sent Hameed back to the pavilion. This was a crucial point in the match as England have lost 1 wicket with a score of 52 and Hameed’s wicket triggered a collapse which put England under pressure at the end of the day’s play.

At the end of the day 2, Visitors have put 103 runs on the board at the loss of five wickets and they got an uphill task for remaining three days even if they want to manage a draw here. It was a terrific day for India. It began with a wobble similar to the first day with Moeen Ali running through the middle order. But Ashwin and debutant Jayant Yadav redeemed themselves to help India post 455 on the board and England in reply had a disastrous start with Shami breaking Cook’s off stump.
Even though Root and Hameed batted well initially, India picked up four in the final session to seize control of this Test. England still trail by 352 runs. Stokes and Bairstow will look to re-collect England and put them in the better position when they come out to bat once the play resumes.
