New Delhi: Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh recalled the times when he used to train under legendary Bishan Singh Bedi after the latter passed away at the age of 77 on Monday. A former India captain, Bedi was one of the greatest spinners India had ever produced. He breathed his last at his New Delhi home after battling a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife Anju, son Angad and daughter Neha.
Born in Amritsar in 1946, Bedi played 67 Tests for India and took 266 wickets with 14 five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket haul. He was a part of Indian cricket’s golden quartet of spinners that also had Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chadrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan who formed the core of India’s bowling unit for more than a decade between 1966 and 1978.
Yuvraj, a former all-rounder, took to social media platform X (former Twitter) to remember the times when he was not financially strong but Bedi made him understand the value of hard work. “Bedi sir was a mentor to me,” Yuvraj continued.

“At times when I was short of money, he made me focus on training rather than the fees and encouraged me to practice. He, along with my father, made me understand the value of hard work! When he was angry he would say, “Come on son, run! Move your legs”, and when he was happy he would say the same thing!
“If I hit a six, he would say, “Now run six” and if I would block he would say, “that was supposed to be a six, so now run six again!” Thank you sir for being a legend of the game and shaping Punjab cricket and helping so many players along the way!
“Your journey was epic because you gave so much back to the game. I hope I can do the same. RIP sir – you will be missed but your legacy will go on forever amen #BishanSinghBedi,” he wrote.
