Sweden International Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is currently plying his trade with Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy was named the ‘Newcomer of the Year’, defeating former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney to bag the award.

‘Newcomer of the Year’ award recognizes footballers with prior experience in their first season in the US-based league.

The title was awarded after the majority of the votes fell in favour of the striker, after balloting of the coaches, players and a pannel of media personnels. Ibrahimovic received an average of 36.36 percent of the votes, whereas England’s Wayne Rooney received 32.25 percent.

Former Arsenal sforward Carlos Vela of Los Angeles FC was third in the standings after receiving 13.47 percent votes.

Ibrahimvic has been a stand out performer for his team scoring an impressive 22 goals while registering 10 assists in his very first full season with the club.

The 37 year old also joined the very elite duo of world football, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after netting his 500th career goal a couple of months ago in the match against Toronto FC.

The footballer has had an illustrious club career across various leagues with some of the biggest clubs in Europe, also has 62 goals to his name for Sweden.
