Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announces that there will be a complete lockdown across the state on January 23rd (Sunday), reported news agency ANI. The Chief Minister in a statement on Friday said the decision was taken considering the increasing caseload in the state, and in the interest of the welfare of the general public. Restrictions and relaxations that were in place during the earlier lockdown on January 16 would continue during the lockdown of January 23.
Auto-rickshaws, call taxis and other vehicles can conduct service for plying people who arrive at railway stations and bus stations. However, for this service, mobile apps have to be downloaded and reserve the time and destination from where the passenger is to be picked up. The Chief Minister also appealed to the people of Tamil Nadu to abide by the directives of the government on the ‘lockdown day’, and avoid unnecessary travel.
Tamil Nadu on Thursday added 28,561 new infections to its COVID-19 aggregate, which rose to 30,42,796 while 39 more fatalities took the toll to 37,112 , the health department said. Recoveries climbed to 28,26,479 with 19,978 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, leaving 1,79,205 active infections, a medical bulletin said.
Chennai, which accounted for majority of the fresh cases, has reported a decline with 7,520 new cases followed by Coimbatore 3,390, Chengalpet 2,196, Kanyakumari 1,148. On Thursday, Chennai had recorded 8,007 cases.
