On Monday night, Madhuri, the daughter of YSR Congress Party Rajya Sabha MP Beeda Masthan Rao was driving the BMW, accompanied by a female friend. She allegedly ran the car over Surya, a 24-year-old painter, who was sleeping on the pavement in Chennai’s Besant Nagar in an inebriated state, NDTV reported.

Officials said while Madhuri fled the spot immediately, her friend got off the car and argued with people who had gathered after the accident. She also left after some time. Some people from the crowd rushed Surya to a hospital, but he died of his injuries.

Surya, who worked as a daily waged painter, was married eight months ago. After the incident, his relatives and neighbours reached the J-5 Shastri Nagar Police Station to demand strict action against the culprit. After checking the CCTV footage of the area, police identified the car as belonging to the BMR (Beeda Masthan Rao) group, owned by Madhuri’s father. She was arrested, however, later granted the bail.

According to a report in India Today, a video has emerged capturing Madhuri’s friend in a heated argument with locals, stating they had requested an ambulance for Surya’s hospital transfer. Chennai Police officials, as per India Today, successfully traced the MP’s daughter and her friend through the ambulance call number.

The Adyar Traffic Investigation Wing Police has registered a case under section 304 A of the IPC (causing death by negligence), a bailable offence, and issued summons to the car owner, PTI reported.

The incident took place less than a month after a teen driver allegedly rammed his Porsche car into a motorbike, killing two young software professionals, including a woman, in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area, on May 19. The teen is currently lodged at an observation home in Pune.
