Google just announced their all new Google Pixel smartphones and the devices are definitely interesting. While in terms of internal hardware, the Google Pixel phones seem nothing really unusual, they are different in certain aspects. For the first time ever, Google has delved into every aspect of a smartphone, from designing to hardware and Google Pixel according to Google is their very own phone. There were some rumours surrounding the device where Huawei claimed it refused to work with Google as Google refused to give them branding but then, with the launch of Google Pixel, everything was forgotten. According to Google, Google Pixel phones stand on 5 pillars or there are 5 founding stones of the device. What are these and why are they so important to the devices? Let’s take a look!

Google Assistant: Needless to say, Google Pixel will be the first smartphones that will debut with Google Assistant. The personal Assistant developed by Google is not just interactive but is an efficient tool to help you manage your device and also optimise search. Google Assistant learns your behaviour over time to give you personalised results. It can not only answer your questions and make your reservations but it can also chat with you and help you in your daily tasks. A whole lot of Google’s event was only about Assistant and the ways Google Assistant will change your life. Assistant is compatible with most apps in Google Play and once you assign a task, it checks previous behaviour and performs the task in the same app without being told to. Google is making Google Assistant available across devices and it will not be restricted only to smartphones.

Photography: Now, this is one area which is always exciting and fun. In modern times, smartphones have slowly eaten away into the camera business and the phones today come with some of the most advanced cameras. Google Pixel is boasting of the “best” camera ever in smartphone history and when it comes to comparisons, the entire focus is on iPhone. According to Google, DXOMark, Google Pixel phones have a rating of 89, which is the highest ever rating a smartphone has received. The rear end camera of both Google Pixel devices is a 12MP snapper with IMX378 lens and 1.55µm pixel size with a f/2.0 Aperture which Google promises give better photos in any kind of light. The front camera is an 8MP shooter and comes with f/2.4 Aperture and fixed focus. Google is promising that camera is one of the strongest features of Google Pixel devices and it is the camera that makes the phone stand apart.

Battery Life: The other area which Google claims Google Pixel phones excel in is the battery life. Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL (the larger phone) come with different batteries owing to their size and display differences though the internals of both the devices are almost similar. In terms of battery, Google Pixel comes with 2,770 mAh battery and Google Pixel XL sports a 3450 mAh battery. The batteries are both non-removable. Both the phones however, come with Google’s new fast charge technology which Google promises is pathbreaking. When the battery is low and the phone is set to charge, the device can be charged for up to 7 hours worth of battery life in just 15 minutes. While Google Pixel promises a standby time of 19 days in LTE, Google Pixel XL offers even more standby time at 23 days in LTE. Battery is one of the most important concerns for smartphones and Google has taken that head on with their Google Pixel phones.

Cloud Storage Integration: Cloud storage is the next big thing and though there are many cloud storage services available, there’s not many who actively use them. Also, with smartphone cameras getting better and better and people now focusing on images and videos over text, the need for storage has increased. Smartphone storages have gone up in the past few months and now we have phones with storages as high as 256GBs and even expandable memory card slots. But then, with hardware drives and memory sticks, there’s always the fear of them crashing or you losing data. And so, in order to push their cloud storage services and also to give better storage options. Google Pixel phones will come with unlimited cloud storage for life. that means, photos and videos in full resolution can be stored on Google Cloud without any charges. Quite an innovation there, Google.

Virtual Reality Support: While most smartphone makers are jumping in on the virtual reality bandwagon and outing it as an amazing invention, there are still reservations people have as VR is in it’s initial stages. Google has jumped right into the fray with the launch of Google Pixel. The phone is compatible with virtual reality and in order to support it, Google has also launched Daydream, their Virtual Reality headset. The VR headset is quite different from other headsets in the market and though right now only compatible with Google Pixel, it does signal the fact that Google is into smartphones for the long haul and thinking up newer ways to stay in the game and give tough competition to their competitors.
