Amazon Prime Video has launched a new 24×7 live-news streaming feature for its existing subscribers, starting from December 2025 (no extra cost):
Prime Video will have a new “News” tab that features live broadcasting of top news channels. Users don’t need a new subscription to access live news: if you already have a Prime (or Prime Video) membership, you’ll automatically receive access to news as well at no extra cost.
The feature will be gradually rolled out to different markets (starting in the U.S. and expanding to more countries worldwide over time).
Streaming platforms are best known as homes for on-demand movies, TV series, and exclusive originals. This new live-news feature now brings traditional live television broadcasts to Prime Video, blurring the lines between cable/satellite networks and over-the-top (OTT) streaming. This could potentially make Prime Video a more comprehensive media destination for both entertainment and news, rather than just curated shows/movies.
The addition of live news also helps differentiate Prime Video within the competitive streaming landscape. Competitors mainly compete over the size/content of libraries, or invest in originals. Live news has the advantage of being a daily habit – something that viewers turn on each day to stay informed. By capturing more of users’ daily time, live news could drive more consistent engagement (outside of binging a new series on weekends).
What users can expect-
Convenience: Access all your favorite entertainment PLUS top news channels without needing a separate app, cable subscription, or dedicated news stream. All of it consolidated within Prime Video.
Cost: Access live news as part of your existing Prime Video subscription, without any additional fees. Users can enjoy free news streaming on top of movies/series for no extra payment.
Ease of use: Navigate between news, movies, and shows easily inside one app.
Context and considerations
Amazon has recently made some changes to the device and access restrictions on Prime Video (for example in India, starting from January 2025, a single Prime account can stream on up to 5 devices, but only 2 of them can be TVs).
Separately, Prime Video has been steadily shifting to an ad-supported model worldwide. All of this needs to be balanced: increased content/features vs. ad-load/user experience.
As such, while the news-streaming feature is interesting, it will be important to track over the coming months the video quality/content mix, ad-load, and any changes to restrictions or features.
Amazon Prime Video, which has long been a home for streaming movies, TV shows, and original series, is evolving into more of a broad media platform: from December 2025, it now has a 24×7 live-news streaming feature that will be included at no extra cost for existing subscribers.
