Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the BHIM  digital payments app on December 30 to enable fast and secure cashless transactions through mobile phones. Developed by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the app has already been download over a million times and has 4-star rating on Google Play app store. Though, the intention of the app can be appreciated for bringing in ease at transaction, but the BHIM app requires fixation in lot of places. “Bhim App – 3 million download since launch, No 1 on Play Store in India amongst all apps, over 500,000 transactions since launch. #MakeinIndia,” Niti Ayog CEO Amitabh Kant said in a tweet . However the play store app listing of BHIM only reflects 1 million downloads.

To work, digital payments app BHIM requires a one time setup. Users can register their bank account with BHIM and set up a UPI PIN for their linked bank account. Once the account and UPI PIN are linked, users can start their transactions. Currently there are 31 national and state banks are listed with BHIM app, that can be linked with UPI allowing subsequent money payments and transfer directly to and from their bank account.

What BHIM primarily lacks is the support for most Indian languages. Presently, the app offers support to only Hindi and English. Also the app is presently not available on iOS devices, which is popularly used in the country. When an iOS user tweeted complaining this, Amitabh responded saying, the app will be available on iOS devices and will get multilingual support in next days. If that happens, it will be a relief.

Developers of the app boasts of a clean and easy user interface as compare to other UPI based apps such as Paytm. However, the clean interface comes along with lot of bugs as well. Some users of the BHIM app have complained freezing of payments page in the app. Users find it unable to go back from the payments page in the app. Thus, users have to exit the application completely and initiate the transaction from scratch. Other users, have complained of multiple unsuccessful OTP (One Time Password) generation. In most case, OTP doesn’t generate at all.

BHIM app is similar to what we have seen on other digital payments app. The app has a long way to cover before it can stand against Paytm, which already owns a large share in digital payments in India. The app is still in its nascent stages and requires regular updates.
