Google and Levi’s ‘Project Jacquard’ smart jacket to release this year, priced at $350
Levi’s and Google’s Advanced Technology and Products (ATAP) group are said to launch the smart jacket for the public later this year for a retail price of $350. Different from the regular industrial yarns used in clothing, Google ATAP developed conductive yarns.
Every now and then, something happens in the world of technology and it is graced with the prefix ‘smart’. You have heard of smartphone (quite obvious), smartwatch, smart werables, smartcars and the latest one is being touted as smart fashion. Google and leading fashion brand Levi’s has been working on a smart jacket for quite some time now and 2017 is the year when it can finally been ovbsereved being materialized. Levi’s, using Google’s smart textiles platform ‘Project Jacquard‘ has manufactured a jacket with circuits weaved in and is being shown off this week at South by Southwest Festival (SXSW), being held in Austin.
Levi’s Jacquard Jacket doesn’t sport any LED screen or display unit, which keeps the essential fashion code intact and the jacket doesn’t come across as a gadget. Rather, the jacket looks similar to denim clothings, the company has been know for. Levi’s Vice President of global innovation Paul Dillinger didn’t find the initial idea of incorporating a display unit on to the jacket and wanted the jacket to have technology integrated in its natural element. Levi’s and Google’s Advanced Technology and Products (ATAP) group are said to launch the smart jacket for the public later this year for a retail price of $350.
“When you go to dinner and see your people at their meals looking at their screen, or when you see cyclists accessing their screens for navigation and putting themselves at risk… to me, that really was the reason to do it,” said Dillinger at a SXSW. “Not because of the dazzling capabilities, but because of the immediate need,” he added, as quoted on The Verge.

Different from the regular industrial yarns used in clothing, Google ATAP developed conductive yarns. ‘Jacquard yarn structures combine thin, metallic alloys with natural and synthetic yarns like cotton, polyester, or silk, making the yarn strong enough to be woven on any industrial loom.’
